OM is the sacred mantra of divinity. It is chanted and revered as the sound from which all other sounds resonate. , awakening universal consciousness. In this way, it is the guru of sounds, invoking the Divine Consciousness in every sound.

A sacred sound must pluck the strings of our hearts in order to unite our entire being. Often we are accustomed to repeating the same prayer with our mind and heart engaged elsewhere. When that happens, the prayer is only given lip surface. The real grace comes when we are unified on all levels of our being. As the Yoga Sutra tells us:

When expressed with great devotion, the sacred sound reveals our Divine nature.
-Yoga Sutra I:29

A Meditation: Experiencing OM as Divine Consciousness by repeating and listening.

Sit quietly and comfortably, either on a chair or on the floor.

Align your head, neck, and spine. Expand your heart center.

Take in a few deep breaths to calm the body, mind, and emotions.

Begin to chant the sacred mantra OM four distinct ways.

First, inhale deeply and pronounce the “O” longer then the “M”: OOOOOOOMMM.

This enlivens the earth chakras (energy centers) and allows us a feeling of groundedness.

Repeat several times.

Second, inhale deeply and give the “O” and “M” sounds equal length: OOOOMMMM.

This brings balance to the earth and to the higher chakras.

Repeat several times.

Third, inhale deeply and elongate the “M” sound: OOOMMMMM.

This brings awareness to the higher chakras for meditation.

Repeat several times.

Fourth, inhale deeply and chant OM with the elongated M as before. Then, exhale without any audible sound, only listening internally: OOOMMMMM.

This allows awareness to move to the highest levels of consciousness.

Repeat several times

Be still and listen, and know that you are Divine.
